The Meaning of Life
Eagles and owls are beautiful, strong, and noble.
ワシやフクロウは、美しく、力強く、気高い生き物です。
These creatures are kinds of raptors.
これらの生き物は、猛禽類の仲間です。
Dr. Saito Keisuke works as a vet in Hokkaido.
齊藤慶輔さんは、北海道で獣医として働いています。
He takes care of injured wild raptors.
彼は、けがをした野生の猛禽類の世話をしています。
He communicates with them during treatment.
治療のあいだ、彼は鳥たちと意思を通わせます。
①For example, he looks at them with sharp eyes when he doesn’t want them to move.
たとえば、動いてほしくないときには、鋭い目つきで鳥たちを見ます。
②Dr. Saito also helps injured raptors return to nature.
齊藤さんはまた、けがをした猛禽類が自然に帰る手助けもしています。
He keeps them together in a huge cage and limits the amount of their food.
彼は鳥たちを巨大なケージでいっしょに飼い、えさの量を制限します。
So they have to compete with each other for food.
そのため、鳥たちはえさをめぐって互いに競い合わなければなりません。
③Such a severe environment enables them to live in the wild again.
そのような厳しい環境が、鳥たちが再び野生で生きることを可能にするのです。
④The number of raptors has been decreasing.
猛禽類の数は、減り続けています。
Their deaths are often caused by humans.
その死は、人間によって引き起こされることが多いのです。
One day, a weakened eagle was brought to Dr. Saito.
ある日、弱ったワシが齊藤さんのもとに運ばれてきました。
It had no wounds, but he found some pieces of lead inside its stomach.
傷はありませんでしたが、胃の中から鉛のかけらが見つかりました。
Why did it have pieces of lead?
なぜ、鉛のかけらがあったのでしょうか。
Many hunters used lead bullets.
多くの猟師が鉛の弾を使っていました。
When the bullet hit an animal, the lead spread in its body.
弾が動物に当たると、鉛は体の中に広がります。
Some hunters left the dead bodies of the animals.
動物の死体をそのまま残していく猟師もいました。
Eagles sometimes ate them and died of lead poisoning.
ワシはときどきそれを食べ、鉛中毒で死んでいったのです。
Dr. Saito wanted hunters to stop using lead bullets.
齊藤さんは、猟師たちに鉛の弾を使うのをやめてほしいと思いました。
He explained the problem to many people.
彼は多くの人にこの問題を説明しました。
However, it was not easy to change the situation.
しかし、状況を変えることは簡単ではありませんでした。
Some hunters got angry with Dr. Saito.
齊藤さんに腹を立てる猟師もいました。
They thought he was blaming them.
自分たちが責められていると思ったのです。
⑤However, he didn’t think that hunters were his enemies.
しかし、彼は猟師が敵だとは考えていませんでした。
He just wanted to solve the problem of lead poisoning with their help.
ただ、猟師たちの力を借りて、鉛中毒の問題を解決したかったのです。
Dr. Saito’s passion moved the hunters’ hearts little by little.
齊藤さんの情熱は、少しずつ猟師たちの心を動かしました。
⑥Thanks to Dr. Saito’s efforts, the use of lead bullets was finally banned in Hokkaido.
齊藤さんの努力のおかげで、北海道では鉛の弾の使用がついに禁止されました。
Later, the Japanese government announced that it would be banned throughout Japan.
のちに日本政府は、日本全国で禁止すると発表しました。
Some injured raptors cannot return to nature.
けがをした猛禽類の中には、自然に帰れないものもいます。
⑦Is it possible for those raptors to live meaningful lives?
そのような鳥たちが、意味のある生を生きることは可能なのでしょうか。
Dr. Saito believes each life has its own meaning.
齊藤さんは、どのいのちにも、それぞれの意味があると信じています。
Chibi, an owl, was born with disabilities.
フクロウのちびは、障がいをもって生まれました。
Dr. Saito assigned Chibi to work as a goodwill ambassador.
齊藤さんは、ちびに親善大使の仕事を任せました。
People touched Chibi and felt the softness of his feathers.
人々はちびに触れ、羽のやわらかさを感じました。
⑧Chibi made humans and owls closer.
ちびは、人間とフクロウの距離を近づけたのです。
⑨Dr. Saito thinks that the lives of wild animals are as valuable as the lives of humans.
齊藤さんは、野生動物のいのちは人間のいのちと同じくらい価値があると考えています。
His actions teach us that humans and animals should live in harmony.
彼の行動は、人間と動物は調和して生きるべきだと私たちに教えてくれます。
