Mr. and Ms. Brown came to Japan from Canada a month ago. When they lived in Canada, they often went hiking. They wanted to enjoy it in Japan, too.
ブラウン夫妻は1か月前にカナダから日本へ来ました。カナダに住んでいたとき、彼らはよくハイキングに行きました。日本でもそれを楽しみたいと思っていました。
①One day in May, they went hiking to see a waterfall in the forest of a mountain.
①5月のある日、彼らはある山の森にある滝を見るためにハイキングに出かけました。
They began to walk in the forest at about nine in the morning. About an hour later, they came to a fork. There was a guidepost at the fork. It showed the destinations of the paths. ②But it was difficult for them to understand the Japanese words on the guidepost.
彼らは朝の9時ごろに森の中を歩き始めました。1時間ほどたつと、分岐点に来ました。その分岐点には道しるべがありました。それは小道の行き先を示していました。②しかし、彼らにとって道しるべの日本語を理解するのは難しいことでした。
When they were talking about the guidepost, a young woman came to them. She heard their English words and asked them in English, "Excuse me. May I help you?" Mr. Brown answered, "Yes. We want to go to the waterfall, but it's difficult for us to understand the Japanese words on this guidepost." She said, "Oh, I see. I'm also going to go to the waterfall. There are some other forks in this forest, so let's go together." Mr. Brown said, "Oh, thank you." They began to walk together and the woman said, "I'm Keiko. I'm a college student and I like English. I live near here and often visit the waterfall."

When they came to the waterfall, Ms. Brown said, "This waterfall is very beautiful!" Keiko said, "I like this waterfall. ③I want many people to come here." Then they talked a lot and had a good time there.
滝に着くと、ブラウン夫人は言いました。「この滝はとてもきれいね!」ケイコは言いました。「私はこの滝が好きです。③たくさんの人にここへ来てほしいのです。」それから彼らはたくさん話し、そこで楽しい時を過ごしました。
(約1年後)
Mr. and Ms. Brown went hiking to see the beautiful waterfall again.
ブラウン夫妻は、その美しい滝をもう一度見るためにハイキングに出かけました。
When they came to the first fork, Mr. Brown said, "Look at the guidepost!" The new guidepost was written in Japanese and English. ④It also had some pictures to show the destinations. Ms. Brown said, "This will help many people." ⑤They found such guideposts at the other forks, too.
最初の分岐点に来ると、ブラウンさんは言いました。「道しるべを見て!」新しい道しるべは日本語と英語で書かれていました。④それには行き先を示す絵もいくつかついていました。ブラウン夫人は言いました。「これはたくさんの人の助けになるわね。」⑤ほかの分岐点でも、彼らはそのような道しるべを見つけました。
When they came to the waterfall, they saw a young woman there. Mr. Brown said to her, "Excuse me. I think we met you at this mountain last year. You are ...." She said, "I'm Keiko. I'm glad to see you again, Mr. and Ms. Brown." Ms. Brown said, "We're glad to see you again, too, Keiko." Then they enjoyed talking. Mr. Brown said to Keiko, "I saw the new guideposts. They are great." Keiko said, "Thank you very much. When I met you last year, ⑥I found that understanding the guideposts was a problem for you. I told my father about it. Then we made the new guideposts. My father is the caretaker of this mountain." Mr. Brown said, "Oh, really? ⑦The new guideposts will help many people from other countries find their way to their destinations easily." Keiko said, "We hoped that, so we made the new guideposts. My father painted the pictures and I wrote the Japanese and English words."
滝に着くと、彼らはそこで若い女性を見かけました。ブラウンさんは彼女に言いました。「すみません。去年この山であなたにお会いしたと思うのですが。あなたは……。」彼女は言いました。「ケイコです。またお会いできてうれしいです、ブラウンさん。」ブラウン夫人は言いました。「私たちもまたあなたに会えてうれしいわ、ケイコ。」それから彼らは楽しく話しました。ブラウンさんはケイコに言いました。「新しい道しるべを見ました。すばらしいですね。」ケイコは言いました。「どうもありがとうございます。去年あなたたちに会ったとき、⑥道しるべを理解することがあなたたちにとって問題だとわかりました。そのことを父に話しました。それで私たちは新しい道しるべを作ったのです。父はこの山の管理人なんです。」ブラウンさんは言いました。「えっ、本当ですか。⑦新しい道しるべは、外国から来たたくさんの人が目的地への道を簡単に見つける助けになるでしょう。」ケイコは言いました。「私たちもそう願って、新しい道しるべを作りました。父が絵を描き、私が日本語と英語の言葉を書いたのです。」
