There is a question in math.
①A child can understand it.
But the best minds in the world could not answer it for 358 years.
This is a story about two men.
②One man wrote the question in the margin of a book, and the other man spent his life on it.
In math class, you learned a famous rule about triangles: a² + b² = c².
a² + b² = c² です。
For example, 3² + 4² = 5².
About 380 years ago, a Frenchman named Fermat was reading an old math book.
He worked at a court, and math was only his hobby.
But he was very good at it.
That day, he was looking at the same rule about triangles.
Then he had an idea.
“We use two here. What will happen with three?”
He looked for answers to x³ + y³ = z³, but he could not find any.
It was the same with four, five and six.
Then he wrote a short note in the margin, next to that rule.
“When n is three or more, there are no natural numbers x, y and z for xⁿ + yⁿ = zⁿ.
③I have found a wonderful proof of this, but this margin is too small to hold it.”
Then he died, and nobody found his proof.
His son printed the note.
Fermat left many other notes like this.
He often wrote, “I can show this,” but he never showed it.
Little by little, other people proved his ideas one by one.
Almost all of them were right.
At last, only one note was left.
It was the question in the margin.
④People began to call it “Fermat’s Last Theorem.”
Many great people tried to answer this question for hundreds of years.
⑤It became one of the most famous problems in math.
In 1963, a ten-year-old boy named Andrew Wiles found the story of this problem in a library in England.
He could understand it easily, and he was very excited.
He thought, “Someday I will solve it.”
He grew up and became a mathematician.
He never forgot that dream.
When he was about thirty-three, an idea from two Japanese mathematicians opened a new road to the answer.
So Wiles went into a small room at the top of his house, and he began to work alone.
For seven years, he worked in that room almost every day.
⑥In the summer of 1993, Wiles came out of that room with his proof.
He gave three lectures at a university, but he did not tell anyone his goal.
For three days, he talked quietly, and nothing looked special.
Then, at the end of the third lecture, he wrote one more line on the blackboard.
It was Fermat’s Last Theorem.
“I think I will stop here,” he said.
That was all.
Then the quiet room was filled with clapping.
Newspapers around the world wrote about him.
His dream came true.
⑦But two months later, another mathematician found a mistake in his work.
Wiles was shocked.
He worked on the mistake for a year, but he could not fix it.
He almost gave up.
Then, on a morning in September 1994, he was sitting at his desk.
Suddenly he saw the way to fix it.
It was the most important moment of his life.
⑧The 358-year-old problem was finally over.
Wiles waited about thirty years for that morning.
He met the problem at ten, and he solved it at forty-one.
One man asked the question, and 358 years later, another man answered it.
⑨If you have a dream now, you do not have to make it come true soon.
Keep it in your heart, and keep working.
Your morning will come, too.
