A long time ago, people believed that the earth was the center of the universe.
むかしむかし、人々は地球が宇宙の中心だと信じていました。
They thought that the sun, the moon, and the stars went around the earth.
太陽や月や星が地球のまわりを回っていると考えていました。
Almost everyone believed this.
ほとんどすべての人がこれを信じていました。
①The Church also taught it, and it was very dangerous to say a different thing.
教会もそう教えていました。そして、ちがうことを言うのはとても危険でした。
In Italy, there was a man called Galileo.
イタリアに、ガリレオという名の男性がいました。
He was born in 1564.
彼は1564年に生まれました。
When he was young, he was interested in many things, and he loved to ask “Why?”
若いころ、彼は多くのことに興味を持ち、「なぜ?」とたずねることが大好きでした。
He studied at a university, and later he became a teacher of math and science.
彼は大学で学び、のちに数学と科学の先生になりました。
One day, Galileo heard about a new tool.
ある日、ガリレオは新しい道具のことを聞きました。
It was called a telescope.
それは望遠鏡と呼ばれていました。
②With a telescope, people could see things far away.

Galileo made his own telescope.

It was better than the old ones.

Then he did something new.

He looked at the sky through it.

He looked at the moon and the stars, and he was very surprised.

The moon was not smooth.

It had mountains and holes.

③Jupiter had four small moons going around it.
木星には、そのまわりを回っている4つの小さな月がありました。
Galileo watched them every night, and he understood something important.
ガリレオは毎晩それらを観察し、大切なことを理解しました。
Those moons did not go around the earth.
それらの月は地球のまわりを回ってはいませんでした。
They went around Jupiter.
木星のまわりを回っていたのです。
So he thought, “Maybe the earth is not the center of everything.”
そこで彼は思いました。「もしかすると、地球はすべての中心ではないのかもしれない。」
④Galileo read a book written by a man called Copernicus.
ガリレオは、コペルニクスという男性によって書かれた本を読みました。
In the book, Copernicus said, “The earth goes around the sun.”
その本の中で、コペルニクスは「地球は太陽のまわりを回っている」と述べていました。
Galileo believed that this idea was right.
ガリレオは、この考えが正しいと信じました。
Now he had a reason.
今や彼には根拠がありました。
He saw it with his own eyes through his telescope.
彼は自分の望遠鏡を通して、自分自身の目でそれを見たのです。
Galileo began to tell people about his idea.

He wrote books, and many people read them.

But some people got angry.

They said, “You are wrong. The Church says that the earth does not move.”

Galileo answered, “Please look through my telescope. Then you will see.”

But many of them did not want to look.

In 1633, Galileo was called to Rome.
1633年、ガリレオはローマに呼び出されました。
He was almost seventy years old.

⑤He was told, “You must say that your idea is wrong. If you don’t, you will be in great danger.”

Galileo was afraid.
ガリレオは恐ろしくなりました。
He was old and sick.

Finally, he said in front of many people, “My idea was wrong. The earth does not move.”

There is a famous story about that day.

⑥People say that after Galileo said those words, he said in a small voice, “And yet it moves.”
ガリレオはその言葉を言ったあとで、小さな声で「それでも地球は動く」と言った、と言われています。
We are not sure that he really said it.

But many people believe that he thought so in his heart.

After that, Galileo had to stay in his house.
そのあと、ガリレオは自分の家にとどまらなければなりませんでした。
He was not allowed to go out.
彼は外に出ることを許されなかったのです。
But he did not stop studying.
しかし彼は研究をやめませんでした。
He continued to write, and he taught his students at home.
彼は書き続け、家で生徒たちに教えました。
He died in 1642.
彼は1642年に亡くなりました。
Today, we all know that the earth goes around the sun.

Galileo was right.
ガリレオは正しかったのです。
Some people say that he was one of the first true scientists.
彼は最初の真の科学者の一人だった、と言う人もいます。
⑦He studied science by looking, not by just believing.

He showed us something important.

⑧If you want to know the truth, look with your own eyes, and don’t be afraid to ask “Why?”
